The Cemeteries, Praha, Czech Republic, June 2023
Not one, but two cemeteries visited during this trip. I couldn't not go to the old Jewish cemetery. I talked about it in the story "Old Jewish cemetery" so I wouldn't do the story again. I also visited the Vyšehrad cemetery...
Vyšehrad Cemetery (Vyšehradský hřbitov in Czech) opened in 1869, in Vyšehrad, a district of Prague, is a cemetery where many artists, scientists, politicians and sportsmen are buried. It sits on a hill in the south of the city, bordering the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul. Some personalities are grouped in the collective tomb called Slavín.
This cemetery adjoins a convent. You will see a photo with Jesus on small crosses and just the date of death. These are the tombs of the sisters of the convent.
Some tombs are really magnificent and those under the "Corridor" have beautiful frescoes. Its ceiling is also sublime. Unlike our cemeteries, like in Vienna or kyiv, the graves have funerary lanterns, containing candles that must be lit at certain times. You will also see a tomb with just a funeral lantern above the vault.
