Macau, China, November 2025
The city remains imbued with Portuguese culture with the typical Portuguese tiles...
It seems strange to have 3 languages indicated most of the time. Most signs are indicated in Chinese, English and Portuguese.
I even asked a police officer if he spoke Portuguese or English. "A little" he replied.
I thought Macau had been Chinese for a long time. In the end, it has only been 26 years, more recently than Hong Kong (1999).
There are monuments to see but the main attraction remains the casinos. Even in my hotel, close to the arrival of the ferries, had one.
Unfortunately, these were not the games I play, the poket on the machine. Blackjack or "Sic Bo", a kind of Yahtzee.
The creation of this administration dates back to the mid-sixteenth century, when Macau was colonized and gradually occupied by the Portuguese. From 1887, China officially recognized Portugal's sovereignty and perpetual occupation (initially for a period of 99 years) in Macau through the Sino-Portuguese Treaty of Beijing.
In 1987, after intense negotiations between Portugal and China, the two countries agreed that Macau would return to Chinese sovereignty on December 20, 1999.
In a century, the territory of Macau has expanded considerably over the sea, from 11.6km2 (4.47sqmi) in 1912 to 29.9 km2 (11.54sqmi) in 2012. The islands that formed the territory were gradually connected to each other, either by bridges or by embankments.
Today, Macau is experiencing rapid economic growth, based on the strong development of tourism and gambling. Macau is one of the richest cities in the world thanks to the chambers. Orson Welles called it "the most perverted city in the world" and the poet W. H. Auden called it "the city of indulgence".
