Diving in Malapascua, Philippines, January 2017
I really enjoyed this first trip to the Philippines. The dives are very beautiful with water at 26° (78.8F).
Shallow depths allow long dives and finishing with 20bar is common. The encounter with thresher sharks was a moving and comical moment by the sight of all these divers kneeling behind a chain. I felt like I was at the zoo or the circus.

Bugtong Bato (8-30m/3-12ft): A dive site with a bit of everything, a gently sloping reef that leads to a small descending wall, where the still sloping reef continues down to 30m (12ft) where a sandy bottom extends outwards. A wide variety of macro life can be found here, including seahorses, frogfish and nudibranchs. A wide variety of life.
Dakit-Dakit: Small rocks stick out of the water and create atmosphere breathtaking, especially at sunset. Between these soft corals you will find flatworms, nudibranchs and different shrimps. Schools of small sardines lurk in these waters while tuna and trevally often patrol the area in the hope of finding prey.
Gato Islands (24m/9ft): Gato Island is the one of the most famous diving spots. Gato is a marine reserve and sanctuary for sea snakes. You can see banded sea snakes, cuttlefish (often when mating), seahorses, nudibranchs, frogfish, scorpionfish, fish porcupine and giant prawns. There are many resident bald sharks in Gato, especially in a cave.
Monad Shoal (20-28m/8-11ft) : The dive starts early in the morning, between 5am and 6am, not recommended for late risers. After 30 minutes by boat, you arrive at Monad Shoal to discover thresher sharks. In the afternoon you can see manta rays. You arrive on a set and kneel behind a chain so as not to venture into the washing station.
North-Point (22m/8ft): Beautiful corals and marine life varied including frogfish of different colors, fiery sea urchin hikers, especially zebra crabs, candy crabs and nudibranchs. Great macro.
Quillano (12-22m/4-8ft): Quillano is a deep dive several levels. Beautiful hard corals cover the top and it is common to see frogfish, nudibranchs of various kinds, octopus, ghost fish and squat shrimp.

Kokay's maldito dive resort : A very friendly diving club. Security may seem light but the Dive Masters know their job. Don't be surprised when you signal 50bar to continue diving. These are mostly shallow dives.
