Al Haouaria, Tunisia, September 2024
Al Haouaria, a small town at the tip of Tunisia, at Cap Bon, close to Tunis…...
The travel from Tunis may seem long but it is worth it. You will leave the tourist areas and you will know the real Tunisia, with its beautiful face, but also its faults.
In certain aspects, Tunisia is modernizing, but it takes time for all the projects to come to fruition. The "Dignity Revolution" (ثورة الكرامة) , in late 2010 and early 2011 played a role. But today, the people are still waiting for their aspirations to be realized. I hope, with all my heart, that these people will manage to obtain what they ask for.
El Haouaria (Arabic: ?????????) is a Tunisian town located at the northeastern end of Cape Bon, at the entrance to the Gulf of Tunis.
Its geographical location, its contrasting relief and its mild and temperate climate make it a favorite refuge for a multitude of migratory birds. The Romans nicknamed the place Aquilaria or "land of the eagle".
Artificial caves were dug by prisoners or slaves under the authority of the Carthaginians and then the Romans. The blocks of stone, extracted, were used in the construction of the Punic city, but also in the construction of the forts of the medina of Tunis. These underground quarries have been exploited for almost 1,000 years.
Thanks to Habib, a friend, who recommended this place to rest and try to dive again.
Thanks to Dominique François, the manager of Villa Zembra, who helped me a lot during my stay. I put the link to Villa Zebra.
