Malapascua, Philippines, January 2017
Malapascua is a very beautiful island, 3 hours drive from Cébu then a boat crossing and you reach this beautiful little island of 2.5km (1.55mi) by 1km (0.62mi). It remains an island of divers where the number of diving clubs is important, as well as hotels.
Apart from diving, occupations remain simple, such as drinking a good little rum in the evening or sipping a San Miguel facing the sea or a freshly squeezed fruit juice. Given the size of the island, you can go around it and see the lighthouse or the northernmost beach, Langob Beach Heaven, a beach more hectic than those to the south.
The name "Malapascua" is said to have been given to the island by Spaniards whose ship was stranded in the island on Christmas Day, December 25, 1520, due to bad weather. Due to their misfortune of having to spend Christmas away from their comrades and family, stranded on a desert island, the Spaniards are said to have called the island Mala Pascua, which literally means "Bad Easter".
However, there are discussions about the origin of this name. "Mal" means "bad" in Cebuano, "pasco" means "Christmas" in Cebuano and "pascua" means "spring" in Spanish. Even so, Spaniards and foreigners now refer to Malapascua Island, while local residents insist that their island be called "Logon".
